Supai, Arizona

There’s
an Indian village down in the Great Canyon called Supai. It’s about 50 miles
downstream (west) of the National Park’s, south rim entrance. You can take
one of three ways to get there; Walk down, Ride horseback or fly down in a helicopter. You
can get a one-way ride for about $55, but only between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon.
In my opinion, the best way would be to walk down so you can take your time
and enjoy the scenery. But on the way up, I would recommend riding horseback
with one of the Havasupai Indian guides would be a very fulfilling experience.
The trail is a rugged 10 miles walk through a red rock canyon. The day I went,
it was about 124 degrees F, so 1 1/2 qts. of water was just about just about
enough. The walk took me about 4 1/2 hours to get down, but I did stop for a
lot of pictures. The trail is about 10 miles to the village and another 3 to the first falls. The other falls are close to together.

| Being
sure footed with a good pair of hiking boots are needed, due to the rough
terrain. There’s no danger in falling off any cliffs, but you may twist
an ankle due to the loose rocks, so be careful. By the way, that rock
pointing upwards in the above picture is about 20 feet tall. |
